Helping Kids Cope with Mistakes

February 7, 2011 By Patrick Cohn

All athletes at some time become upset, frustrated, or angry at themselves (or other people). How your kids perform will depend on their ability to let go of mistakes and stay composed. Emotional control is the ability to stay even tempered, level headed, or to remain calm when challenged by mishaps or adversity.

One important point to keep in mind: Kids are responsible for their own frustration. They bring it on themselves. Your kids must understand that it’s not the mistake or error that causes frustration. It is their belief or perception about these events that creates frustration. Your athletes must learn how to change the way they think about mistakes so they can be more composed. This requires that your kids learn how to reframe their thoughts or beliefs about mistakes and think in ways to instill composure.

Help sports kids improve composure. Visit The Composed Sports Kid to find out how.
