Mental Game Tips for Athletes and Coaches

Good Communication Improves Teamwork

May 17, 2011 By Patrick Cohn

Communication is the ability to share meaningful information with others through verbal and non-verbal language. Communication from you, the coach, to the athlete is more than just sending a one-way message. As a coach, you have to be a good listener, you need to accurately understand your students, and you need to be able to effectively communicate your knowledge of the game.

First, you must have the athlete’s or team’s attention. Then, explain yourself in an easily understood manner taking into account the level of the athletes. Finally, you need to make sure that the athlete has understood your message as you intended. You can do this by asking them what they understood or how they might change their thinking in the future.
