Mental Game Tips for Athletes and Coaches

Helping Athletes Trust in Themselves

When it’s time to compete, you want your athletes to stop practicing their technique. All the training is complete. Competition is the time to put it to the test! They need to commit to simplifying their performance so they can perform functionally instead of perfectly. Help them put practice behind them and let it flow.

Ask your athletes to suspend the over-trying mindset. Trying too hard to be perfect with their performance will not help them let it flow in competition. They must simplify their performance. Avoid game time analysis and critiquing their skills. Analysis leads to fixing what’s wrong, which may not need “fixing” in the first place. I suggest you help athletes forget about errors, and move on to the next play, pitch, or shot.
