Does Anger Help You Perform Better?

April 12, 2011 By Patrick Cohn

Is anger helpful or harmful to your game? Anger in itself is not the worst of the negative emotions. It is counter-productive for more athletes I work with, but there are worse emotions such as grief, depression and fear. In most cases, anger is negative, but in rare cases a select group of athletes can use it to help them. John McEnroe and Bobby Knight are two examples.

These athletes are certainly not role models for children but they do prove a point about anger. Anger can be transformed into intensify and focus. Being a competitive person is a good thing, but is important to not let your emotions take control of your performance. Try to use the anger positively to help pump you up and focus better instead of dwell on what caused the anger.
