Improving Sport Parenting Skills

February 11, 2011 By Patrick Cohn

As a parent, you have the ability and responsibility to ensure that your child or teen reaps all the physical, social and emotional benefits of playing sports – and stays in the game. It is important that you support your young athletes as they are challenged with the many expectations and mental game pressures associated with taking part in competitive sports today.

Sit down with your kids to identify the top challenges for you as a sports parent—and the most mental game challenges for your kids. Develop a plan to help you and your athletes address these challenges and improve your sport parenting skills.  Know your role as a sport parent, and accept your responsibilities.  Do not put excess pressure on your athlete through high expectations.  Keep your composure and control your emotions during before, during, and after competition. Remember to support your athlete’s confidence, and lead by example.
